Indications

Umactin 100 is used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections caused by specific types of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and some strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species.

Pharmacology

Umactin 100 is an antibacterial medicine that works specifically against urinary tract infections. Umactin 100 dissolves well in urine, which may turn brown. Umactin 100 works by changing bacterial proteins and other important molecules. Umactin 100 is effective against several bacteria, including Gram-positive ones like Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative ones like Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, and others.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: For uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 50-100 mg four times a day. Continue for 1 week or at least 3 days after urine sterility is achieved. For long-term treatment, take 50-100 mg at bedtime.

Capsule (Adult): For acute infections: 50 mg four times daily for 7 days. For long-term treatment: 50-100 mg once daily.

SR Capsule (Adult & Children over 12): 100 mg every 12 hours for 7 days.

Suspension (Children): 5-7 mg/kg/day in four doses. Doses depend on weight, ranging from 2.5 ml to 10 ml four times daily.

Interaction

Taking antacids with magnesium trisilicate can reduce how well Nitrofurantoin is absorbed. Uricosuric drugs, like Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazone, may also decrease the effectiveness of Nitrofurantoin.

Contraindications

Umactin 100 should not be used by people with kidney problems such as anuria or oliguria. Umactin 100 is also not recommended for pregnant women between 38-42 weeks, during labor, or delivery. Umactin 100 is contraindicated for those allergic to Nitrofurantoin.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, headache, and gas. Less common side effects include diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, dizziness, and sleepiness.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Umactin 100 is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Umactin 100 should only be used during pregnancy if necessary. Umactin 100 may be present in small amounts in breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding, especially if your baby is under one month old.

Precautions & Warnings

If any lung-related reactions occur, the medication should be stopped. Avoid taking antacids containing magnesium trisilicate with Nitrofurantoin.

Overdose Effects

Overdose may cause vomiting, and inducing vomiting is recommended to prevent further issues.
