Indications
Renamycin is used to treat various infections such as respiratory tract infections, mycoplasma pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases like infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Renamycin also treats skin infections like acne and rosacea, eye infections like trachoma, rickettsial infections, and other infections like psittacosis, brucellosis, cholera, and acute intestinal amoebiasis.
Pharmacology
Renamycin works by stopping bacteria from growing. Renamycin attaches to the 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents the binding of amino-acyl tRNA to the ribosome’s A site. This binding is reversible. Renamycin is lipophilic, which means Renamycin can easily pass through cell membranes or diffuse through channels in the bacterial membrane.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours. Renamycin is important to take Renamycin either one hour before or two hours after meals, as food, milk, and some dairy products can reduce its effectiveness.

Taking antacids containing Aluminum, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, or Iron can reduce the absorption of this drug. In long-term use, Renamycin may lower the effectiveness of blood thinners, so the dose of these medications may need to be adjusted. There have been cases of pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding when using Renamycin with oral contraceptives.
