Indications
Oxycaine is used to temporarily numb the front surface of the eye, allowing for eye pressure measurement or the removal of a foreign body.
Pharmacology
Oxycaine is a local anesthetic. Oxycaine is less irritating than tetracaine and has similar action time and duration. Oxycaine works by binding to sodium channels and stabilizing the nerve membrane, which reduces the ability of the nerve to conduct impulses, blocking the feeling of pain.
Dosage & Administration
Use as a 0.4% solution for short eye procedures. Place 1 drop in the eye and wait 60 seconds for eye pressure measurement. If more anesthesia is needed, apply another drop after 90 seconds. For foreign body removal or certain eye surgeries, apply 3 drops at 90-second intervals. To reduce absorption, press the tear duct for 1 minute during and after use. Avoid use on inflamed or infected areas, and protect the numbed eye from dust and contamination. Do not drive until your vision returns to normal.

Side Effects
Possible side effects include allergic reactions, stinging or blurred vision, nervous system excitement, muscle twitching or tremors, and seizures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Oxycaine is categorized as Pregnancy Category C. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the fetus, but no controlled studies are available in women. The drug should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.
Precautions & Warnings
To minimize absorption, press the tear duct for 1 minute after instilling the drops. Oxycaine should not be used on inflamed or damaged tissue. Protect the eye from dust or bacteria while Oxycaine is numb. Avoid driving until vision returns to normal.
