Indications
Alveofact is used to prevent and treat Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature babies. RDS is a condition that affects the lungs of premature infants. Alveofact is given to babies with a birth weight less than 1250 g or signs of surfactant deficiency, ideally within 15 minutes of birth. For babies needing help with breathing, Alveofact is given within 8 hours of birth. Clinical studies show Alveofact may not help babies who have received a prenatal steroid treatment unless RDS develops within the first 6-8 hours.
Pharmacology
Surfactant is a substance that helps keep the lungs open and functioning properly. When premature babies don’t have enough surfactant, they get RDS. Alveofact is used to replace the missing surfactant, improving lung function. In studies, Alveofact has been shown to reduce surface tension and improve lung function in premature animals. Alveofact helps increase oxygen levels and lung compliance, making Alveofact easier for babies to breathe.
Dosage & Administration
Administration: Alveofact is only given through the trachea by doctors who are experienced in caring for premature babies. Careful monitoring of oxygen levels is essential to avoid too much oxygen in the body.
Dosage: The dose is based on the baby’s weight (100 mg per kg of birth weight). Up to 4 doses can be given in the first 48 hours, spaced 6 hours apart.

There are no known interactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this treatment.
Precautions & Warnings
Alveofact is only for use in highly supervised clinical settings with experienced doctors. Babies should be monitored for oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during treatment. Bradycardia (slow heart rate) or low oxygen levels may occur during the treatment, and the procedure should be paused if this happens. Rales (wet sounds in the lungs) may also occur temporarily but are not a cause for concern unless there are signs of airway obstruction.
Overdose Effects
Overdose has not been reported, but Alveofact may lead to airway obstruction. Treatment should focus on providing support and stabilizing the baby. If needed, suctioning the airways may be done to clear any obstruction.
Therapeutic Class
Alveofact is a pulmonary surfactant, part of a class of medicines used to help the lungs function properly.
Storage Conditions
Keep the vials in the fridge (2-8°C) and protect from light. Only use the vial once and discard any unused drug.
