Indications

Loramide is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, abdominal cramps associated with diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, post-gastric surgery, and ulcerative colitis.

Pharmacology

Loramide works by reducing the movement of muscles in the intestine, which helps slow down diarrhea. Loramide does this by binding to opiate receptors in the gut, increasing the time Loramide takes for the intestines to move food along. Loramide also increases the tone of the anal sphincter and reduces fluid and electrolyte loss in the intestines.

After being taken, Loramide is absorbed in the body at a rate of more than 65%. Peak levels are reached about 4 hours after taking the medication. Loramide undergoes metabolism in the liver and intestines, with only a small amount entering the bloodstream. Loramide is eliminated mostly through the bile and feces.
