Indications

Besibac is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by certain bacteria, including Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum, Corynebacterium striatum, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella lacunata, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Streptococcus mitis group, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus salivarius. Effectiveness for some of these bacteria was studied in a small number of cases.

Pharmacology

Besibac belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and works by stopping bacterial growth. Besibac does this by blocking two important bacterial enzymes: DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are needed for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Studies have shown that when used as an eye drop, very little of Besibac enters the bloodstream, keeping systemic exposure low.
