Indications
Sono is used to help manage insomnia, which includes having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep during the night, or waking up too early in the morning.
Pharmacology
Sono is a sedative/hypnotic and a non-benzodiazepine that works by interacting with GABA receptors in the brain. Sono is quickly absorbed and has a half-life of about 6 hours in adults. In elderly adults, the half-life is around 9 hours.
Dosage & Administration
Adult dose: The starting dose for most adults (18 to 64 years) is 2 mg, taken just before bedtime. Sono can be increased to 3 mg if needed. For older adults (65 years and older), the starting dose is 1 mg before bedtime and can be increased to 2 mg if necessary. For those who have trouble staying asleep, the recommended dose is 2 mg before bedtime.
Pediatric dose: There is no recommended dosage for children.
If taken with or after a heavy, high-fat meal, Sono may take longer to work and may reduce its effect on helping you fall asleep.
Interaction
Do not take Sono with alcohol or other sedative drugs, as they may cause excessive drowsiness when combined with this medicine.
Contraindications
Sono is not suitable for people with depression, severe lung disease, serious liver disease, those in poor health, or those having thoughts of suicide.
Side Effects
The most common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, hallucinations, and trouble with coordination.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Sono is categorized as pregnancy category C, which means there are no well-controlled studies for pregnant women. Sono should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Sono is unknown whether this medicine passes into breast milk, so Sono should be used with caution in nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Be cautious when using this medication in people with depression, compromised breathing, or those who may develop dependence on sedatives. The lowest effective dose should be used. There has been no sign of developing tolerance to the drug over 6 months in clinical trials.
Overdose Effects
There have been very few reports of overdosing on this drug. One case involved taking 36 mg, and the person fully recovered without lasting effects.
