Indications
Aluctin is used to treat insomnia, which involves difficulty falling asleep, waking up often during the night, or waking up too early. Aluctin is also used for recurring insomnia, poor sleep habits, and in situations where restful sleep is needed, either acutely or chronically.
Pharmacology
Flurazepam is a type of benzodiazepine, which is a drug that helps induce sleep. Aluctin does not affect dreaming time, as measured by rapid eye movements (REM). Aluctin works by reducing the time Aluctin takes to fall asleep and decreasing the number of times you wake up during the night, which helps increase the total sleep time. Flurazepam works by binding to a specific site on GABA-A receptors, which enhances the effects of GABA (a calming chemical in the brain). This opens a chloride channel, leading to more chloride entering the cell, which helps calm the brain.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: The usual dosage is 30 mg at bedtime. In some cases, 15 mg may be enough.
Elderly or debilitated: 15 mg is usually enough for a therapeutic effect.
Children: Aluctin is not recommended for children.
Hepatic and renal impairment: The dosage may need to be reduced in patients with liver or kidney problems.
Interaction
Flurazepam can enhance the effects of other CNS depressants like alcohol, barbiturates, sedative antidepressants, antihistamines, and antipsychotic drugs. Aluctin can also increase the half-life of a metabolite when taken with cimetidine. Antacids might slow down the absorption of flurazepam.
Contraindications
Aluctin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or any of the ingredients in the capsule.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, light-headedness, staggering, and ataxia, especially in elderly or debilitated individuals. Severe effects like sedation, lethargy, disorientation, and even coma have been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Flurazepam is classified as pregnancy category-C and is not recommended for pregnant women. Mothers who are breastfeeding should avoid taking Aluctin.
Precautions & Warnings
The risk of oversedation, dizziness, confusion, or ataxia is higher with larger doses, especially in elderly or weakened patients. In such cases, the dosage should be limited to 15 mg. Caution should be taken in patients with depression or those who may have suicidal tendencies. Additionally, Aluctin should be used carefully in people with chronic lung, kidney, or heart problems.
Overdose Effects
In case of overdose, symptoms may include sleepiness, confusion, or coma. Aluctin’s important to monitor vital signs like respiration, pulse, and blood pressure. General supportive care and immediate gastric lavage are necessary.
