Indications
Raditrol 0.25 is indicated for the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, postsurgical hypoparathyroidism, idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with moderate to severe chronic renal failure (pre-dialysis), and vitamin D dependent rickets.
Pharmacology
Raditrol 0.25 is an active form of vitamin D3 that is made in the kidneys from a precursor. Raditrol 0.25 helps the body absorb calcium from the intestine and supports bone health. The main role of Raditrol 0.25 is to control calcium levels in the body and support bone strength by promoting bone cell activity.
Dosage & Administration
Post-menopausal Osteoporosis: The recommended dose is 0.25 mcg twice a day.
Renal Osteodystrophy (dialysis patients): The initial dose is 0.25 mcg daily. If calcium levels are normal or slightly low, 0.25 mcg every other day may be enough.
Hypoparathyroidism and Rickets: Start with 0.25 mcg once a day. If no improvement is seen in 2-4 weeks, the dose can be increased gradually.
Injectable Dose: For severe hypocalcemia, the starting dose is between 1 mcg to 2 mcg, three times a week. The dose can be adjusted if needed.
Interaction
Using Raditrol 0.25 with thiazide diuretics can raise calcium levels. Caution is needed when taking Raditrol 0.25 with digitalis as high calcium levels can cause heart problems. Magnesium-containing drugs (like antacids) may increase magnesium levels.
Contraindications
Raditrol 0.25 is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients or those with diseases that cause high calcium levels in the body.
Side Effects
Early side effects include weakness, headache, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, muscle and bone pain, and a metallic taste. Long-term side effects can include excessive thirst and urination, weight loss, eye problems, and high blood pressure. Rarely, Raditrol 0.25 may cause serious heart problems or mental health issues.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Raditrol 0.25 is not known to cause harm to the fetus, but Raditrol 0.25 should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Raditrol 0.25 is safe to use while breastfeeding, but calcium levels should be monitored in both mother and baby.
Precautions & Warnings
Taking too much of Raditrol 0.25 can lead to high calcium levels. Be cautious if you are taking digitalis because high calcium can cause heart problems. If hypercalcemia occurs, stop using Raditrol 0.25 immediately. Vitamin D and related supplements should be avoided during treatment.
Overdose Effects
Overdose can cause high calcium, phosphorus, and urinary calcium levels. Treatment involves stopping the medication and reducing calcium intake.
