Indications

Ucol 2 is used to treat an overactive bladder with symptoms like urgent need to urinate, frequent urination, and leaking urine.

Pharmacology

Ucol 2 works by blocking certain receptors in the bladder that help control urination. Ucol 2 specifically targets bladder muscles, not other areas like the salivary glands. A major metabolite (5-hydroxymethyl derivative) also helps provide the treatment effect, especially in people who process the drug well. The treatment effect should be noticeable within four weeks.

Dosage & Administration

Extended-release capsule: The recommended dose is 4 mg once a day. The dose can be reduced to 2 mg once a day depending on how the patient responds. For those with liver or kidney problems, or taking certain medications, the recommended dose is 2 mg daily.

Film-coated tablet: The recommended dose is 2 mg twice a day, except for those with liver or severe kidney problems (GFR<30 ml/min), who should take 1 mg twice a day. If side effects are troubling, the dose can be reduced to 1 mg twice daily. The treatment should be reassessed after 2-3 months.

Pediatric use: The safety and effectiveness of the drug in children have not been established.

Geriatric use: No significant difference in safety between older and younger patients has been observed.

Interaction

When taken with Ketoconazole or other drugs that block the CYP3A4 enzyme, the concentration of the drug in the body increases. For patients on these medications, the recommended dose is 2 mg daily.

Contraindications

Ucol 2 is not suitable for people with urinary retention, stomach problems, narrow-angle glaucoma, or those who are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are dry mouth, headache, constipation, and stomach pain. Dry mouth was most frequently reported, occurring in 23.4% of users. Other possible side effects include blurry vision, trouble urinating, and dry eyes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no studies on the drug in pregnant women. Ucol 2 should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Ucol 2 is also unknown if the drug passes into breast milk, so Ucol 2 should not be taken while breastfeeding unless necessary.

Precautions & Warnings

Ucol 2 should be used carefully in people with bladder problems, digestive issues, or narrow-angle glaucoma. Those with liver or kidney issues should take 2 mg daily. There may be a risk of heart problems (QT prolongation) with higher doses. This should be considered if the patient has a history of heart issues or is taking other medications that affect the heart.

Overdose Effects

Overdosing on the drug can lead to severe side effects such as confusion or heart issues. Monitoring with an ECG is recommended in case of overdose.

Therapeutic Class

Ucol 2 belongs to the class of medications used to treat urinary retention, incontinence, and bladder problems.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place, away from light, and out of reach of children.
