Indications

Euvax-B is used to protect against Hepatitis B infection caused by all known subtypes of the Hepatitis B virus. Since Hepatitis D depends on Hepatitis B for infection, Euvax-B is also prevented by this vaccine.

Immunization is recommended for everyone, especially those at high risk, such as:

  • Babies born to mothers with Hepatitis B
  • People with contact to blood or body fluids through cuts, bites, or sores
  • Those who share personal items like razors or toothbrushes
  • People who have unprotected sex with someone infected with Hepatitis B
  • Drug users sharing needles
  • People in close contact with someone infected with Hepatitis B
  • Medical staff, dialysis patients, and people in certain institutions
  • Travelers to areas with high Hepatitis B rates
  • People with HIV or certain blood conditions

Dosage & Administration

Neonates, infants, and children up to 19 years: 0.5 ml of the vaccine (containing more than 10 mcg of antigen).

Adults (19 years and older): 1 ml of the vaccine (containing more than 20 mcg of antigen).

Primary immunization: 3 doses of vaccine, with doses taken at:

  • First dose: at selected date
  • Second dose: 1 month after first dose
  • Third dose: 6 months after first dose

An accelerated schedule (4 doses) may be used for quicker protection.

For babies born to Hepatitis B-positive mothers: 4 doses, starting at birth with Hepatitis B immunoglobulin, followed by doses at 1, 2, and 12 months.

For travelers leaving within 1 month: 4 doses at 7 days, 21 days, and 12 months after the first dose.

For kidney patients and those with renal issues: 4 doses of 40 mcg each at specific intervals.

Contraindications

Euvax-B is contraindicated in people who are allergic to any component of the vaccine, including yeast. Euvax-B should not be used by those who have had an allergic reaction to a previous Hepatitis B vaccine.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate the Hepatitis B vaccine well. Common reactions are mild and go away quickly. These include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Some people may also experience fever, headache, tiredness, or digestive issues like diarrhea or vomiting. Rarely, allergic reactions like rash or itching may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of this vaccine during pregnancy has not been fully studied. Euvax-B should only be used if the risk of Hepatitis B infection is high. There is limited data about its use during breastfeeding, but Euvax-B can be used if necessary.

Precautions & Warnings

Euvax-B is important to monitor people with iron overload or certain blood disorders. If someone does not respond to the vaccine, further testing may be needed to determine the cause.
