Indications
Anuva is used for short-term treatment of conditions such as post-traumatic pain, swelling, and inflammation (like sprains), post-operative pain, inflammation, and swelling (e.g. after dental or orthopedic surgery), painful and/or inflammatory conditions in gynecology (e.g. primary dysmenorrhoea or adnexitis), migraine attacks, painful spine syndromes, non-articular rheumatism, and as an additional treatment for severe painful inflammatory infections of the ear, nose, or throat (e.g. pharyngotonsillitis, otitis).
Pharmacology
Anuva works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2), which reduces the production of prostaglandins—substances that cause pain and inflammation. Diclofenac helps to decrease these chemicals in the body, relieving pain and inflammation associated with various conditions.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: After an initial dose of 50 mg, 25-50 mg can be taken every eight hours if needed.
Migraine: Start with 50 mg, then take another 25-50 mg after 2 hours if necessary. The maximum daily dose is 150 mg. The tablets should be taken whole with water, preferably before meals.
Children (14 years and older): Up to 75 mg daily in divided doses.
Interaction
Anuva may interact with the following drugs: lithium and digoxin (increases their levels in the blood), anticoagulants (increases bleeding risk), cyclosporin (can cause kidney damage), methotrexate (increased toxicity), diuretics (may reduce their effectiveness), and other NSAIDs or steroids (can increase side effects).
Contraindications
Anuva is contraindicated in patients allergic to Diclofenac or other NSAIDs, and should not be used in individuals who have had asthma, hives, or allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Anuva is also contraindicated in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery for perioperative pain.
Side Effects
The side effects are usually mild and temporary. Some of the common side effects include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, indigestion, and gas. Rare but serious side effects can include gastrointestinal bleeding and peptic ulcers, sometimes with bleeding or perforation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Anuva is not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. The lowest effective dose should be used, and Anuva should be avoided during the last trimester of pregnancy. Small amounts of Diclofenac can be passed into breast milk, but no harmful effects on the infant are expected.
