Indications
Dysmen is used for treating fever, toothache, headache, migraine, primary dysmenorrhoea, heavy menstrual bleeding, mild to moderate pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, traumatic pain, lower back pain, and juvenile chronic arthritis in children.
Pharmacology
Dysmen contains Mefenamic Acid, a nonsteroidal medication with pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and fever-reducing properties. Dysmen works by blocking enzymes that produce prostaglandins and preventing prostaglandin action at receptor sites.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: Take 500 mg up to three times per day (1.5 gm total) with meals. The dose may be reduced to 250 mg three times a day. For heavy menstrual bleeding, take 500 mg three times daily starting from the first day of menstruation.
Children: 6 months to 1 year: 5 ml three times a day. 2-4 years: 10 ml three times a day. 5-8 years: 10 ml four times a day. 9-12 years: 15 ml four times a day. Treatment should not last more than 7 days unless advised by a doctor.
Interaction
Aspirin: Avoid taking Mefenamic Acid with Aspirin as Dysmen may increase the risk of side effects.
Warfarin: Mefenamic Acid can affect blood clotting and may increase bleeding time in patients taking warfarin.
Contraindications
Dysmen is not suitable for patients with known allergies to Mefenamic Acid, or those with peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, or liver and kidney problems. Dysmen should also be avoided by individuals who experience allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Side Effects
Common side effects (affecting 1-10% of patients) include stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, bloating, nausea, stomach ulcers, vomiting, dizziness, kidney issues, itching, and rashes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Its safety during pregnancy has not been established. Dysmen should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Mefenamic acid can pass into breast milk, so Dysmen should not be taken by breastfeeding mothers due to potential effects on the baby’s heart.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in people with allergic conditions, especially asthma. Stop using Dysmen if you experience diarrhea, rashes, jaundice, low blood platelet count, or a form of anemia.
