Indications

Cabolin is used to stop milk production (lactation) after childbirth, stillbirth, abortion, or miscarriage. Cabolin can also be used if you do not wish to breastfeed. Additionally, Cabolin is used to treat other conditions caused by hormonal imbalances that lead to high levels of prolactin.

Pharmacology

Cabolin is a dopamine receptor agonist. The secretion of prolactin by the pituitary gland is mainly controlled by the hypothalamus through dopamine. Cabolin is a long-acting drug that binds strongly to D2 receptors. Cabolin helps reduce prolactin secretion, as shown in animal studies. Cabolin has low affinity for other dopamine receptors and serotonin receptors.

Dosage & Administration

For initiation of therapy: Take 0.25 mg twice a week. The dose can be increased by 0.25 mg every 4 weeks, up to 1 mg twice a week, depending on the prolactin levels. If no improvement is seen at higher doses, the lowest effective dose should be continued. After normal prolactin levels are maintained for 6 months, treatment may be stopped but should be monitored regularly.

To prevent lactation after delivery: Take 1 mg on the first day after delivery.

To stop lactation after breastfeeding has begun: Take 0.25 mg every 12 hours for two days.

For reducing prolactin levels in other conditions: Take one 0.5 mg tablet per week (split into two doses). The dose can be increased up to 4.5 mg or until the patient responds to treatment.

Interaction

Cabolin can interact with medications that lower blood pressure, treat mental illnesses (such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol), nausea and vomiting medicines (like domperidone), and migraine treatments (including pergolide, bromocriptine, and others).

Contraindications

Cabolin should not be used by people with a history of serious mental illnesses, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure during pregnancy with swelling and protein in the urine (toxemia), or those with puerperal psychosis related to childbirth.

Side Effects

Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking Cabolin. Cabolin is pregnancy category B. If pregnant for at least one month, you should stop taking Cabolin, as Cabolin will stop milk production. Do not take Cabolin if planning to breastfeed.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant should discuss Cabolin with their doctor before starting treatment. Cabolin is pregnancy category B, and Cabolin should not be used during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not use Cabolin if allergic to Cabolin or other similar medications like pergolide, bromocriptine, or ergotamine. Avoid using Cabolin with severe liver disease or high blood pressure during pregnancy. Cabolin should not be used in people with a history of mental illness or in those who have been treated with antipsychotic drugs. Caution is needed when administering Cabolin with other blood pressure-lowering medications. Cabolin is not recommended for inhibiting normal lactation. Use with care in patients with liver issues.

Overdose Effects

Therapeutic Class

Cabolin belongs to the class of antiparkinson drugs.
