Indications
Virux 400 is used to treat severe Herpes simplex in people with weak immune systems, serious genital herpes, chickenpox in weak immune patients, and shingles in those with severe symptoms. Virux 400 also treats Herpes simplex infection in the brain.
Pharmacology
Virux 400 works by stopping the virus from multiplying. Inside infected cells, Virux 400 changes into its active form, which blocks the virus from making more DNA, preventing its spread.
Dosage & Administration
For Herpes simplex: 5 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For severe shingles: 5 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For chickenpox in weak immune patients: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For brain infection from Herpes simplex: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours.
Each dose should be given as a slow IV infusion over one hour.
Interaction
Taking Virux 400 with probenecid slows its removal from the body, increasing its effects. In older adults, using Virux 400 with diuretics can raise its levels significantly.
Contraindications
Virux 400 should not be used by people allergic to Virux 400 or to Valacyclovir.
Side Effects
Some side effects include drowsiness, confusion, tremors, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and increased liver enzymes. If injected incorrectly, Virux 400 can cause swelling and irritation at the site.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Virux 400 should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. If breastfeeding, Virux 400 should only be taken if necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
Virux 400 must be given slowly through IV and never by mouth. Patients should drink plenty of water to prevent kidney problems. Those with kidney disease, dehydration, or using other kidney-harming drugs should be cautious.
Overdose Effects
Overdose can cause kidney failure, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, seizures, and coma. Drinking water helps prevent crystal buildup in urine. Dialysis may be needed to remove excess drug.
