Indications
Medroxy 5 is used to treat secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance, as long as there are no underlying conditions like fibroids or uterine cancer. Medroxy 5 is also used to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia in postmenopausal women who are taking daily oral estrogen supplements.
Pharmacology
Medroxy 5 works by transforming the lining of the uterus into a secretory state when given in recommended doses. Medroxy 5 has androgenic and anabolic effects but does not have significant estrogenic activity. When given by injection, Medroxy 5 prevents ovulation by stopping the production of hormones that trigger follicle development. However, this effect is not seen with the usual oral dosage.
Dosage & Administration
Secondary Amenorrhea: Take 5 to 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days. For the best results, take 10 mg daily for 10 days. You can start this therapy at any time, and withdrawal bleeding usually happens within 3 to 7 days after stopping the medication.
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Due to Hormonal Imbalance: Start taking 5 to 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days, starting on day 16 or 21 of your menstrual cycle. Withdrawal bleeding usually happens within 3 to 7 days after stopping the therapy.
Endometrial Hyperplasia Prevention: For postmenopausal women taking estrogen, 5 to 10 mg daily for 12 to 14 days a month can help reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. This therapy can start on either day 1 or day 16 of the cycle.
