Indications

Onicon is used to treat various fungal infections, including vaginal, oral, and esophageal candidiasis, as well as infections of the skin (Tinea), nails (Onychomycosis), and hair (Kerion). Onicon is also used to treat cryptococcal infections (including meningitis) and prevent cryptococcal meningitis in patients at risk. Additionally, Onicon is used to prevent fungal infections in patients with weakened immune systems and for systemic fungal infections such as histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis.

Pharmacology

Onicon is a type of antifungal medication that works by blocking the production of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, by inhibiting fungal enzymes. This helps in treating fungal infections by weakening the cell structure of the fungus.

Dosage & Administration

Adults:

  • Vaginal Candidiasis: 150 mg as a single dose.
  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg daily for 14 days.
  • Oesophageal Candidiasis: 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg daily for 14-30 days.
  • Tinea (skin infections): 150 mg weekly for 4-6 weeks.
  • Kerion: 50 mg daily for 20 days.
  • Pityriasis versicolor: 400 mg as a single dose.
  • Onychomycosis (nail infections): 150 mg weekly for 12 months.
  • Invasive candidal infections and cryptococcal infections: 400 mg on the first day, then 200-400 mg daily.
  • Prevention of cryptococcal meningitis: 200 mg daily.
  • Prevention of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients: 50-400 mg daily.

Children (over 1 year):

  • For superficial candidiasis: 1-2 mg/kg daily.
  • For systemic infections: 3-6 mg/kg daily.
  • For serious infections in children aged 5-13 years, doses up to 12 mg/kg daily (maximum 400 mg daily) may be used.

For renal impairment: Dosage may need adjustment based on kidney function.

Interaction

Onicon can interact with certain medications. For example, Onicon can increase the effects of blood thinners like warfarin. Onicon may also affect the blood sugar levels when taken with diabetes medications. Other drugs that may interact include diuretics, phenytoin, and rifampicin. Patients should be monitored for any changes in their treatment when taking Onicon alongside other drugs.

Contraindications

Onicon should not be used by people who are allergic to Onicon or related medications in the same group.

Side Effects

Common side effects include stomach issues like nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and gas. Other side effects like rash are less common. In rare cases, serious allergic reactions like anaphylaxis and liver damage have been reported.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Onicon should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless absolutely necessary, due to limited human data and potential risks to the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with severe liver or kidney disease should use caution. If liver problems develop, treatment should be stopped. If a rash appears, Onicon may indicate a serious reaction, and the medication should be discontinued. Monitoring is advised for those with serious underlying conditions, such as AIDS.

Overdose Effects

In case of overdose, immediate medical help should be sought. Treatment may include measures like gastric lavage and diuresis. Dialysis can help remove the drug from the body more quickly.
