Indications
Flomox is used to treat bacterial eye infections (conjunctivitis) caused by certain bacteria. These include:
- Aerobic Gram-positive bacteria: Corynebacterium species, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus warneri, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans group.
- Aerobic Gram-negative bacteria: Acinetobacterlwoffii, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae.
- Other bacteria: Chlamydia trachomatis.
Flomox is also used as an intraocular injection to prevent bacterial infections after eye surgery.
Pharmacology
Flomox works by stopping bacteria from multiplying. Flomox does this by blocking two important enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are needed for bacteria to copy and repair their DNA. This prevents the bacteria from growing and spreading.
Dosage & Administration
Eye Drops: Place one drop in the affected eye three times a day for 7 days.
Eye Ointment: Apply a small amount to the affected eye three times a day for the first two days, then twice a day for the next five days, or as directed by a doctor.
Intraocular Injection: The doctor may give an injection of 0.2-0.4 ml before eye surgery. The exact dose will be decided by the doctor.
Interaction
No drug interaction studies have been done with Flomox. However, lab tests suggest Flomox does not interfere with enzymes that break down other drugs, meaning Flomox is unlikely to affect how other medicines work in the body.
Contraindications
Flomox should not be used by people who are allergic to Flomox, any other quinolones, or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are eye problems like irritation, blurry vision, dry eyes, and redness. These side effects occurred in 1-6% of patients. Other non-eye related side effects reported in 1-4% of patients include fever, coughing, ear infections, sore throat, rash, and runny nose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is not enough research to show whether Flomox is safe during pregnancy. Flomox should only be used if the doctor thinks the benefits outweigh the risks. Flomox is not known if Flomox passes into breast milk, so Flomox should be used with caution by breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Long-term use can cause other infections like fungal infections. If this happens, stop using Flomox and try other treatments. If needed, doctors should examine the eyes closely. Patients with bacterial eye infections should avoid wearing contact lenses.
Overdose Effects
There is no information available on overdose effects for this medication.
Therapeutic Class
Flomox belongs to the class of ophthalmic antibacterial drugs used to treat eye infections.
