Indications

Seftrim DS is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria, including respiratory tract infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis. Seftrim DS is also used for genito-urinary infections, such as urinary tract infections and gonorrhoea, as well as gastrointestinal infections caused by certain bacteria. Seftrim DS is also used for infections like osteomyelitis, skin infections, and some parasitic infections.

Pharmacology

Seftrim DS is a combination of two drugs, Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole, which work together to block bacterial enzymes, stopping the production of folic acid in the bacteria, leading to their death. This combination is effective against a wide range of bacteria and some protozoa.

Dosage & Administration

For individuals over 12 years:

For mild to moderate infections: 1 tablet twice a day.

For severe infections: 1.5 tablets twice a day.

For long-term therapy (more than 14 days): 0.5 tablet twice a day.

For gonorrhoea: 2 tablets every 12 hours for 2 days or 2.5 tablets followed by another dose after 8 hours.

For individuals under 12 years (Suspension form):

6-12 years: 2 teaspoonfuls twice a day.

6 months-5 years: 1 teaspoonful twice a day.

6 weeks-6 months: 0.5 teaspoonful twice a day.

Interaction

There are no known significant interactions.

Contraindications

Seftrim DS is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to trimethoprim or sulphonamides, or those with folate deficiency, severe liver or kidney problems, or certain blood conditions.

Side Effects

Seftrim DS may cause mild side effects like headache, nausea, vomiting, or feeling unwell. Rare side effects include skin reactions, blood disorders, and allergic reactions. Most of these side effects are mild and temporary.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Seftrim DS should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as Seftrim DS can pass to the baby and cause harm, such as jaundice or kernicterus.

Precautions & Warnings

Seftrim DS should be used with caution in patients with diabetes or those taking certain diabetes medications. Long-term use can lead to a type of anemia, which can be treated with folinic acid. Seftrim DS is also important to monitor for signs of low folate levels, especially during prolonged treatment.
