Indications
Voricare 200 is used to treat fungal infections in patients 12 years and older. Voricare 200 is effective for conditions like:
– Invasive aspergillosis
– Candidemia (nonneutropenic) and widespread candidiasis affecting the skin, abdomen, kidneys, bladder wall, and wounds
– Esophageal candidiasis
– Serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum and Fusarium species, including Fusarium solani
– Patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to other treatments.
Pharmacology
Voricare 200 is a triazole antifungal medication used to treat serious fungal infections. Voricare 200 works by stopping the fungus from making ergosterol, an important part of the fungal cell membrane. This is done by inhibiting the enzyme CYP450-dependent 14-alpha sterol demethylase.
Dosage & Administration
Oral:
– For patients weighing 40 kg or more: Take 400 mg or 10 ml every 12 hours for the first 24 hours. After that, take 200 mg or 5 ml twice daily.
– For patients weighing less than 40 kg: Take 200 mg or 5 ml every 12 hours for the first 24 hours. After that, take 100 mg or 2.5 ml twice daily. Or, follow the doctor’s directions.
Injection:
– Invasive Aspergillosis: Initial dose is 6 mg/kg every 12 hours for the first 24 hours. Maintenance dose is 4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
– Candidemia and deep tissue Candida infections: Initial dose is 6 mg/kg every 12 hours for the first 24 hours. Maintenance dose is 3-4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
– Scedosporiosis and Fusariosis: Initial dose is 6 mg/kg every 12 hours for the first 24 hours. Maintenance dose is 4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
Interaction
Voriconazole may interact with drugs that affect CYP3A4, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19. If you are using these types of drugs, your dosage of Voriconazole may need to be adjusted, and you should be monitored for any side effects or lack of effectiveness. Some drugs may need to have their doses lowered. When used with Phenytoin or Efavirenz, you may need to increase the Voriconazole dose.
Contraindications
Voricare 200 is not recommended for individuals who are allergic to Voriconazole or any of its ingredients. Voricare 200 should not be used with medications like terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, sirolimus, rifampin, carbamazepine, certain barbiturates, efavirenz, ritonavir, rifabutin, ergot alkaloids, or St. John’s Wort due to the risk of serious side effects or loss of effectiveness.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are stomach pain, anemia, blurred vision, headaches, chest pain, nausea, and diarrhea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies for pregnant women. Voricare 200 should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the baby. Consult with a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
If using this medication for long periods (more than 180 days), the benefits and risks should be carefully evaluated. Long-term use may be linked to a higher risk of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma).
