Linatin M 500 is used alongside diet and exercise to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes when both Linagliptin and Metformin Hydrochloride are appropriate treatments.
Pharmacology
Linagliptin helps manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Linatin M 500 works by blocking DPP-4, an enzyme that breaks down incretin hormones like GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones help release insulin from the pancreas when blood sugar is high and reduce the release of glucagon. This helps control blood sugar levels.
Metformin Hydrochloride is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Linatin M 500 lowers blood sugar levels by reducing the liver’s production of glucose, reducing the amount of glucose absorbed by the intestines, and improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Dosage & Administration
Linagliptin & Metformin immediate release tablet: The dose should be adjusted according to how well Linatin M 500 works and how well Linatin M 500 is tolerated. The maximum recommended dose is 2.5 mg of Linagliptin and 1000 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride twice a day with meals. Start with a lower dose to reduce possible stomach issues.
Recommended starting dose: For those who haven’t taken Metformin before, start with 2.5 mg of Linagliptin and 500 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride twice a day.
For people who already take Metformin, start with 2.5 mg of Linagliptin and their current dose of Metformin twice a day.
Linagliptin & Metformin extended release tablet: The dose should be adjusted based on effectiveness and tolerability, not exceeding 5 mg of Linagliptin and 2000 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride per day. This combination should be taken once daily with a meal.
Recommended starting dose: For those not yet taking Metformin, start with 5 mg of Linagliptin and 1000 mg of Metformin once a day.
For those already using Metformin, start with 5 mg of Linagliptin and a similar total dose of Metformin once daily.
Interaction
Certain drugs eliminated by the kidneys, like amiloride, digoxin, and morphine, may interact with Metformin and affect how Linatin M 500 works. Careful monitoring is recommended when these drugs are taken together.
Drugs like Topiramate that affect bicarbonate levels may increase the risk of metabolic acidosis when used with this combination. Use with caution.
Rifampin, a drug that speeds up certain enzymes, can reduce the effectiveness of Linagliptin, so alternative treatments may be needed.
Other drugs that increase blood sugar, like diuretics or steroids, can interfere with blood sugar control, so patients should be monitored closely.
Contraindications
Linatin M 500 is not recommended for people with kidney problems, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, or allergies to Linagliptin or Metformin Hydrochloride.
Side Effects
Common side effects include sore throat (nasopharyngitis) and diarrhea. Low blood sugar is also more likely when used with other medications like sulfonylureas.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies for this combination in pregnant women, so Linatin M 500 should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Linatin M 500 should also be used with caution during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
If you experience lactic acidosis while taking Metformin, stop the medicine immediately and get medical help. Pancreatitis has also been reported, so contact your doctor if you have severe stomach pain or other symptoms.
Be cautious if you’re taking alcohol, other medicines, or preparing for surgery, as these factors can affect your blood sugar.
Overdose Effects
If you overdose, supportive measures such as removing unabsorbed material from the stomach and monitoring vital signs should be used. Linagliptin is not removed by dialysis, but Metformin can be.
