Indications

Acaril 50 is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pharmacology

Acaril 50 works differently from other diabetes medications. Instead of increasing insulin production, Acaril 50 slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates in the intestines. This helps prevent spikes in blood sugar after meals. Since Acaril 50 has a unique way of working, Acaril 50 can be combined with other diabetes medications for better blood sugar control.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual starting dose is 25 mg, taken by mouth three times a day with the first bite of each main meal. To reduce stomach-related side effects, some people may start with a lower dose and gradually increase Acaril 50. The dose can be adjusted based on blood sugar levels, with a maintenance dose between 50 mg to 100 mg three times daily.

Interaction

Some medications may raise blood sugar levels and reduce its effectiveness, including diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid drugs, birth control pills, and certain other medications. When taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, there is a higher risk of low blood sugar. If this happens, the doctor may need to adjust the medication doses.

Contraindications

Acaril 50 should not be used by people allergic to any of its ingredients. Acaril 50 is also not suitable for those with diabetic ketoacidosis, liver disease, severe digestive disorders, or conditions that cause intestinal blockages.

Side Effects

Common side effects include gas, diarrhea, upset stomach, constipation, or stomach pain. These usually improve over time. Following the recommended diet can help reduce these effects. If side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Acaril 50 has not been proven safe for use during pregnancy. A small amount has been found in the milk of animals, but Acaril 50 is unclear if Acaril 50 passes into human breast milk. Because many drugs can be passed through breast milk, Acaril 50 should be avoided while nursing unless prescribed by a doctor.

Precautions & Warnings

Acaril 50 does not usually cause low blood sugar on its own, but when combined with insulin or certain other diabetes drugs, Acaril 50 may increase the risk. If low blood sugar occurs, glucose (not regular sugar) should be used to raise blood sugar levels. In severe cases, intravenous glucose or a glucagon injection may be needed.

Overdose Effects

Unlike insulin or sulfonylureas, an overdose does not cause dangerously low blood sugar. However, Acaril 50 can lead to temporary stomach problems like gas, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. If an overdose occurs, avoid carbohydrate-rich foods and drinks for at least 4-6 hours.

Therapeutic Class

Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor.

Storage Conditions

Store below 25°C. Keep away from moisture and out of reach of children.
