Indications
Acepril 10 is used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children aged 6 years or older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. This has been proven in many studies. Controlling high blood pressure is also part of managing overall heart health, including controlling cholesterol, managing diabetes, taking medications to prevent blood clots, quitting smoking, exercising, and reducing salt intake. Many patients will need more than one medication to control their blood pressure. For detailed guidelines, consult national recommendations like those from the National High Blood Pressure Education Program.
Acepril 10 can be used alone or along with other medications to help lower blood pressure. Acepril 10 can also help treat heart failure and reduce the risk of death after a heart attack, especially when used with other common treatments like aspirin and beta-blockers.
Pharmacology
Acepril 10 works by blocking the action of ACE, an enzyme that turns angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels. This helps relax the blood vessels, reducing blood pressure. Acepril 10 also reduces the release of aldosterone, a hormone that causes the body to retain water and sodium, helping to further lower blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: For high blood pressure, start with 10 mg per day. The first dose should be taken at bedtime to avoid a sudden drop in blood pressure. If you have certain conditions like kidney problems or severe high blood pressure, the dose may be lower, starting at 2.5-5 mg. The usual dose is 20 mg per day, but Acepril 10 may be increased up to 80 mg if needed.
For heart failure, start with 2.5 or 5 mg per day, and increase by up to 10 mg every 2 weeks until the dose reaches 40 mg per day.
After a heart attack, take 5 mg per day for 2 days, then increase to 10 mg per day. If you have low blood pressure, the starting dose should be 2.5 mg per day.
Child: For high blood pressure in children 6 years and older, the starting dose is 0.07 mg per kg of body weight, up to 5 mg once daily.
Interaction
Acepril 10 may increase the blood pressure-lowering effects when taken with diuretics. If used with NSAIDs, Acepril 10 may reduce its effectiveness and cause kidney issues. Acepril 10 may increase the risk of lithium toxicity. If taken with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, Acepril 10 may cause high potassium levels. Acepril 10 may also increase reactions to gold-containing medications.
Contraindications
Acepril 10 should not be used if you have had allergic reactions (angioedema) to ACE inhibitors, have certain hereditary conditions, or are pregnant. Acepril 10 is also not recommended for children with poor kidney function.
Side Effects
Common side effects include headaches, dizziness, tiredness, dry cough, chest pain, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upper respiratory infections, skin rashes, low blood pressure, kidney problems, high potassium levels, and swelling of the intestines. Acepril 10 may also cause increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels in the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Acepril 10 is not recommended during pregnancy, as Acepril 10 may harm the baby. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Acepril 10.
Precautions & Warnings
Be cautious if you have kidney problems, aortic stenosis, heart conditions, or a history of angioedema. There is a higher risk of side effects in black patients. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have children under 6 years old, this medication may not be safe for you.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose include low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, shock, shortness of breath, slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, kidney failure, electrolyte imbalances, and anxiety. Treatment may involve intravenous saline, dialysis, and medications to reverse the effects.
Therapeutic Class
Acepril 10 belongs to the class of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
Storage Conditions
