Indications
Acerux is used to treat severe Herpes simplex in people with weak immune systems, serious genital herpes, chickenpox in weak immune patients, and shingles in those with severe symptoms. Acerux also treats Herpes simplex infection in the brain.
Pharmacology
Acerux works by stopping the virus from multiplying. Inside infected cells, Acerux changes into its active form, which blocks the virus from making more DNA, preventing its spread.
Dosage & Administration
For Herpes simplex: 5 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For severe shingles: 5 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For chickenpox in weak immune patients: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours.
For brain infection from Herpes simplex: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours.
Each dose should be given as a slow IV infusion over one hour.
Interaction
Taking Acerux with probenecid slows its removal from the body, increasing its effects. In older adults, using Acerux with diuretics can raise its levels significantly.
Contraindications
Acerux should not be used by people allergic to Acerux or to Valacyclovir.
Side Effects
Some side effects include drowsiness, confusion, tremors, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and increased liver enzymes. If injected incorrectly, Acerux can cause swelling and irritation at the site.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Acerux should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. If breastfeeding, Acerux should only be taken if necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
Acerux must be given slowly through IV and never by mouth. Patients should drink plenty of water to prevent kidney problems. Those with kidney disease, dehydration, or using other kidney-harming drugs should be cautious.
Overdose Effects
Overdose can cause kidney failure, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, seizures, and coma. Drinking water helps prevent crystal buildup in urine. Dialysis may be needed to remove excess drug.

Storage Conditions
Store between 15°C and 25°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of children’s reach.
