Actine 5
Form: Tablet
Strength: 5mg
Generic Name: Glipizide
Company: Aristopharma Limited
MRP:৳ 2.0 (Tablet)
Is Antibiotic: No
Indications
Actine 5 is used with diet to help control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). Actine 5 may also be used alongside insulin to lower insulin dosage in some patients. However, Actine 5 should be used as a complement to a healthy diet and not as a substitute for Actine 5. Sometimes, Actine 5 may only be needed for short-term use when diet alone isn’t enough to control blood sugar.
Pharmacology
Actine 5 works by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas. This effect depends on the functioning of the beta cells in the pancreas. Actine 5 also helps the body use insulin better and reduces the production of glucose by the liver.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: The dosage varies and should be adjusted based on blood sugar levels. Usually, Actine 5 is taken 30 minutes before a meal. The starting dose is 5 mg, taken before breakfast. Older patients or those with liver problems may start with 2.5 mg. The dose can be increased in small steps as needed, but the maximum dose is 40 mg a day. Some patients may need to take Actine 5 twice a day.
Pediatric patients: Actine 5 is not recommended for children as safety and effectiveness have not been proven.
Interaction
Actine 5 may interact with certain drugs, including NSAIDs, salicylates, sulphonamides, and others, which can increase the risk of low blood sugar. On the other hand, some medications, like diuretics and steroids, can increase blood sugar levels. Patients should be monitored closely for changes in blood sugar when starting or stopping these medications.
Contraindications
Actine 5 should not be used in patients who are allergic to Glipizide or any of its components, those with juvenile diabetes, severe uncontrolled diabetes, or certain severe conditions like kidney or liver failure.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain. Allergic skin reactions like redness, hives, or itching may also occur. Serious side effects like low white blood cells or blood platelets are rare but possible. Other effects can include dizziness, drowsiness, or headache.
Pregnancy & Lactation
If pregnant, Actine 5 should only be used if the doctor believes the benefits outweigh the risks. Actine 5 should be stopped at least one month before delivery to avoid potential harm to the baby. Actine 5 is not recommended during breastfeeding as Actine 5 may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Actine 5 can cause low blood sugar, especially in patients with liver or kidney problems. Careful monitoring is needed for elderly, weak, or malnourished patients. Stress from illness, fever, or surgery may affect blood sugar control, and insulin may be needed in such cases.
Overdose Effects
Information on overdose effects is not available at this time. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose occurs.
Therapeutic Class
Actine 5 belongs to the class of drugs known as sulfonylureas.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
