Indications

Adalimab 40 is used to treat various inflammatory conditions. These include rheumatoid arthritis in adults to reduce joint damage and improve movement, juvenile arthritis for children aged 2 and above, and psoriatic arthritis in adults to help reduce joint issues and improve physical activity. Adalimab 40 also helps treat ankylosing spondylitis, a condition affecting the spine, and Crohn’s disease in both adults and children aged 6 and above to control symptoms and maintain remission. Additionally, Adalimab 40 treats ulcerative colitis when other medications are ineffective and moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. Adalimab 40 is also useful for hidradenitis suppurativa, a skin condition causing painful lumps.

Pharmacology

Adalimab 40 is a human-made antibody that blocks tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a substance in the body that causes inflammation. By blocking TNF, Adalimab 40 reduces inflammation and helps protect the joints and skin from damage. This medication lowers TNF levels, helping control inflammatory responses in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn’s disease.

Dosage & Administration

For Adults: The usual dose is 40 mg every other week. In some cases, the dose may be increased to 40 mg every week.

For Juvenile Arthritis: The dose depends on weight: 10 mg every other week for 10 to 15 kg, 20 mg every other week for 15 to 30 kg, and 40 mg every other week for 30 kg or more.

For Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis: The initial dose is 160 mg, followed by 80 mg two weeks later, then 40 mg every other week.

Interaction

Adalimab 40 should not be used with abatacept or anakinra due to an increased risk of serious infections. Avoid live vaccines while using this medication.

Contraindications

Adalimab 40 should not be used by individuals allergic to any of its components.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are injection site reactions such as redness, pain, or swelling. Other possible side effects include fever, liver issues, skin problems like rashes, and immune system disorders. Serious but rare side effects may involve lung disease, nerve issues, or blood vessel problems.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Adalimab 40 belongs to pregnancy category B. There is limited information on its use during pregnancy, but Adalimab 40 is known to cross the placenta in the third trimester. Adalimab 40 may be present in low amounts in breast milk but is unlikely to affect a breastfeeding baby. Consult your doctor before using during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
