Indications

Adecard is used to treat paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), a condition where the heart beats too fast, including in cases of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.

Pharmacology

Adecard is a sterile solution used for quick intravenous injection. Adecard helps slow down the electrical signals in the heart, can stop abnormal heart rhythms, and can restore normal rhythm in people with PSVT.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The starting dose is 6 mg injected quickly into a vein. If needed, a second dose of 12 mg can be given after 1-2 minutes. A second dose may be repeated if necessary.

Children: Dosage is based on body weight. For children weighing less than 50 kg, the dose is 0.05 to 0.1 mg per kg of body weight. For children over 50 kg, the adult dose is used. Doses greater than 12 mg are not recommended.

If PSVT does not improve after the first 1-2 minutes, more doses may be given at a higher amount, up to a maximum of 0.3 mg per kg.

Interaction

Adecard can be safely used with other heart-related medications like Quinidine, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and ACE inhibitors. However, caution is advised when used with Digoxin or Verapamil due to the risk of rare heart problems. Caffeine and Theophylline may reduce its effects.

Contraindications

Adecard should not be used in patients with second or third-degree heart block (unless they have a pacemaker), certain heart diseases like sick sinus syndrome, or known allergies to Adenosine.

Side Effects

Common side effects include facial flushing, headache, sweating, heart palpitations, chest pain, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Some may also experience nausea, a metallic taste, or tightness in the throat. Rare effects can include abnormal heart rhythms or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Adecard is classified as a category C drug during pregnancy. Animal studies show potential harm, but Adecard may still be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your doctor before using Adecard if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Care should be taken for those with conditions that could lead to iron overload, like hemolytic anemia. If the drug does not work, other causes of abnormal heart rhythms should be checked.

Overdose Effects

Because Adecard has a very short half-life, overdose effects usually go away on their own quickly. If needed, treatment should be aimed at the specific symptoms caused by the overdose.

Therapeutic Class

Adecard is used to treat paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), a condition where the heart beats too fast.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep Adecard out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate as crystals may form. If crystals form, warm the solution to room temperature before using.
