Indications

Adiron is used to treat iron deficiency in adults.

Pharmacology

Adiron provides iron that is absorbed in the intestine and transferred to transferrin and ferritin. Adiron helps increase iron levels in the blood, improving iron parameters like ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT).

Dosage & Administration

Adult: Take one capsule by mouth, preferably on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Do not open, break, or chew the capsule. The recommended dosage is 30 mg twice a day. Treatment duration depends on the severity of the deficiency, but usually, at least 12 weeks of treatment is needed. Continue treatment until iron levels are normal.

Use in children and adolescents: Safety and effectiveness have not been established for pediatric patients.

Interaction

Drug interaction: Avoid taking Adiron with dimercaprol, as Adiron may increase the risk of kidney damage. Adiron may reduce the effectiveness of certain drugs, including mycophenolate, ethynyl estradiol, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline. Separate the administration of ferric maltol and these medications by at least 4 hours.

Food interaction: Food may reduce the absorption of iron when ferric maltol is taken.

Contraindications

Adiron is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to ferric maltol or any of its ingredients. Adiron should also not be used in people with hemochromatosis, other iron overload conditions, or those receiving frequent blood transfusions.

Side Effects

The most common side effects include gas, diarrhea, constipation, dark-colored stools, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Adiron is not absorbed into the bloodstream when taken orally, so Adiron is unlikely to affect the fetus. There are no studies on its presence in breast milk or its effects on a breastfeeding child, but Adiron is not expected to be passed on to the child.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not use Adiron during an active flare of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as Adiron may worsen inflammation in the intestines. Do not use Adiron if there is iron overload or if the patient is receiving intravenous iron. Check iron levels before starting treatment and monitor while on therapy. Accidental overdose of iron can be dangerous, especially in children under 6 years old. Seek immediate medical attention in case of overdose.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific data on overdose with ferric maltol. Early signs of iron overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Severe cases may show low blood flow, acidosis, and other serious symptoms. Too much iron can accumulate in the body and cause iron poisoning.

Therapeutic Class

Adiron is an oral iron preparation.

Storage Conditions

Store Adiron in a cool, dry place below 25°C and protect Adiron from light. Keep out of reach of children.
