Indications
Aerodyl is used to treat bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases where bronchospasm is a problem.
Pharmacology
Aerodyl is a long-acting medicine that works on the ß2 adrenergic receptors to relax the muscles in the lungs. This helps with breathing by reducing the release of substances that cause spasms, stopping swelling, and improving the movement of mucus in the airways.
Dosage & Administration
Children 2-5 years: The normal dose is 10 mg (10 ml syrup).
Children 6-12 years: The normal dose is 10 mg (10 ml syrup), but Aerodyl can be increased to 20 mg if needed.
Adults: Start with 10 mg, and the dose can be increased to 20 mg after 1-2 weeks depending on how well Aerodyl works.
Interaction
Aerodyl may interact with medicines like succinylcholine, MAOIs, ß2-blockers, corticosteroids, diuretics, muscle relaxants, and some xanthine derivatives.
Contraindications
Aerodyl should not be used by people with liver problems, including cirrhosis or severely impaired liver function.
Side Effects
Side effects may include fatigue, nausea, palpitations, headache, dizziness, and tremors.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Aerodyl is recommended to be cautious during the first trimester of pregnancy. Aerodyl is not clear if the medicine passes into breast milk, so caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers. Although terbutaline, a related substance, can pass into breast milk, Aerodyl is unlikely to affect the child at therapeutic doses. Rarely, low blood sugar has been reported in pre-term infants after treatment with ß2 agonists.
Precautions & Warnings
People with severe kidney problems, certain genetic deficiencies, or heart disease should use Aerodyl with caution. The dose may need to be reduced in these cases.
Overdose Effects
Although no human overdose cases have been reported, taking too much could lead to symptoms like headache, anxiety, tremors, nausea, muscle cramps, palpitations, fast heart rate, and heart problems. Blood pressure may drop, and laboratory tests may show high blood sugar and lactic acid levels. High doses may also cause low potassium levels in the blood.
