Indications

AFM is indicated for the treatment of inflammation in the eye, specifically in the conjunctiva, cornea, and other front parts of the eye, that responds to steroids.

Pharmacology

Fluorometholone Acetate is a steroid that helps reduce inflammation caused by mechanical, chemical, or immune reactions. AFM works by blocking certain proteins that control inflammation. AFM also helps reduce the release of compounds that cause inflammation, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. In studies, Fluorometholone showed a lower risk of raising eye pressure compared to Dexamethasone.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: Shake the bottle before use. Instill 1 to 2 drops into the eye 2 to 4 times a day. If needed, the dosage can be increased to 2 drops per hour for the first 24 to 48 hours. Do not stop the medication too early.

Children: Safety and effectiveness have not been proven for children under 2 years old.

Interaction

No specific drug interactions have been reported with Fluorometholone ophthalmic suspension.

Contraindications

AFM is contraindicated in patients with certain eye infections like Herpes simplex, fungal infections, and other viral eye diseases. AFM should also not be used by people who are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include increased pressure in the eye, glaucoma, blurry vision, irritation, pain, swelling, infection, and delayed healing. In rare cases, cataracts or eye ulcers may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

AFM is classified as Pregnancy Category B3. The medication should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. AFM is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk, so a decision should be made whether to continue breastfeeding or discontinue the medication, considering the mother’s needs.

Precautions & Warnings

Great care should be taken when using this steroid medication for patients with a history of Herpes simplex infection. AFM should not be used for more than 10 days without close monitoring. Steroids may hide or worsen eye infections, and if no improvement is seen, another treatment should be considered.

Storage Conditions

Store in a dry, cool place away from light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not use after 4 weeks of opening. Keep out of reach of children. Be careful not to contaminate the dropper tip by touching AFM to the eyelid or other surfaces.
