Indications
It is used to treat severe acne that doesn’t respond to normal treatments like antibiotics and topical treatments. This includes acne that can cause permanent scarring.
Pharmacology
It works by affecting how cells grow and develop, reducing oil production in the skin. This prevents pores from being blocked and helps reduce acne-causing bacteria. It doesn’t directly kill bacteria but helps make the skin less friendly to bacteria. It also reduces inflammation and may improve the immune system’s response.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and elderly: The dose starts at 0.5 mg/kg per day. The dose may be adjusted based on how well the patient responds. Most patients will take 0.5-1.0 mg/kg per day. Treatment typically lasts for 16-24 weeks, and one treatment course is usually enough. If acne returns, a second course may be necessary.
Severe kidney issues: If a patient has severe kidney problems, they should start with a lower dose.
Children: It is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
Interaction
Taking this with Vitamin A or its derivatives can increase side effects. It may also make certain birth control less effective, so it’s recommended to use two methods. Other acne treatments, like benzoyl peroxide, might reduce the effectiveness of this medicine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy is a serious concern when using this medicine. It can cause serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while using this medicine, it should be stopped immediately. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as it can pass into breast milk and affect the baby.
Precautions & Warnings
Women using this medicine must take steps to prevent pregnancy, such as using two forms of contraception. Pregnancy tests are recommended before starting treatment and while on treatment. Follow-up visits should be done regularly to monitor progress.
Overdose Effects
If too much of this medicine is taken, symptoms may include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and even more severe reactions like seizures or unconsciousness.
