Indications
It is used to treat mild to moderate acne, both inflammatory and non-inflammatory types.
Pharmacology
It works by affecting the cell cycle, cell growth, and death. These actions help reduce the production of oil, preventing pore blockages and the growth of bacteria that cause acne. It also reduces the formation of blackheads by preventing the thickening of the skin, though it doesn’t directly kill bacteria. It helps create an environment that makes it harder for acne-causing bacteria to survive. It may also help reduce inflammation and support the immune system.
Dosage & Administration
Apply the gel carefully to the affected area once or twice a day. It may take 6-8 weeks for results to show. It has not been studied in children, as acne rarely occurs in this age group. There are no specific recommendations for elderly patients, as acne is uncommon in them as well.
Interaction
Be cautious when using other topical treatments, especially those with peeling agents (like Benzoyl Peroxide) or abrasive cleansers, while using this product.
Contraindications
It is not suitable for people who are allergic to Isotretinoin.
Side Effects
It may cause stinging, burning, or irritation, and the area treated may become red or peel. If this happens, take a break from using the gel until the irritation goes away. If it continues, stop using it. These reactions usually disappear once you stop using the product.
Pregnancy & Lactation
It is not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks. There is limited evidence on its safety when applied to the skin during pregnancy, though studies in rabbits have shown no harm. Its use during breastfeeding should also be avoided, as it’s not known whether it passes into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
It should not be applied near the mouth, eyes, or on broken skin. Be careful not to let the gel collect in skin folds or around the nose. Avoid using it on sensitive areas like the neck. Exposure to sunlight should be limited when using this product. If you cannot avoid strong sunlight, use sunscreen and protective clothing. It should not be used on sunburned skin, and sunlamps should also be avoided. There may be some risk of skin problems when using it along with sun exposure, especially for those with a history of skin cancer.
Overdose Effects
There have been no reports of overdosing on Isotretinoin. However, if accidentally ingested, symptoms of excessive vitamin A may occur, such as severe headaches, nausea, drowsiness, irritability, and itching.
Therapeutic Class
It is a topical retinoid used in treating acne.
Storage Conditions
Store it in a cool, dry place, away from light.
