Indications

Alcasol is used to relieve discomfort from urinary tract infections, prevent kidney stones, help prevent gout when used with a uricosuric agent, and treat acidosis caused by kidney diseases.

Pharmacology

Alcasol is a solution that helps balance the acid levels in the body. Potassium Citrate is absorbed and changes into Potassium Bicarbonate, acting as a systemic alkalizer. Alcasol works by making the urine less acidic without affecting the whole body’s acidity in recommended doses. The solution is easy to take, tastes good, and is safe even for long-term use. Alcasol doesn’t interfere with digestion or neutralize stomach acid.

Dosage & Administration

To relieve discomfort in UTI:
Adults and children over 6 years: 10 ml, 3 times daily, diluted with 1 glass of water.
Children 1-6 years: 5 ml, 3 times daily, diluted with ½ glass of water.

To prevent kidney stones, prevent gout with a uricosuric agent, and treat acidosis caused by kidney diseases:
Adults: 10-15 ml, 4 times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted with 1 glass of water.
Pediatric: 5-10 ml, 4 times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted with ½ glass of water.

Interaction

Taking this product with potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides may increase the risk of toxicity.

Contraindications

Alcasol is not recommended for people with severe kidney problems, untreated Addison’s disease, acute dehydration, severe heart damage, or high potassium levels.

Side Effects

This solution is generally well tolerated by people with normal kidney function. However, excessive use or use in patients with kidney problems may cause high potassium levels or alkalosis. Symptoms of high potassium include weakness, confusion, tingling, and other signs of potassium buildup in the body.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is no available information regarding the use of this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with low urine output. Dilute the solution with water to avoid gastrointestinal issues and preferably take Alcasol after meals. Large doses may cause high potassium levels and alkalosis, especially in those with kidney problems.

Overdose Effects

If too much is taken, especially in people with kidney problems, Alcasol may lead to high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). This condition is serious and should be treated immediately, as Alcasol can be life-threatening. Treatment includes stopping potassium intake, using dextrose solutions, and possibly using dialysis to remove excess potassium from the body.

Therapeutic Class

Alcasol is used to prevent repeated kidney stone formation and as a urinary alkalinizing agent.

Storage Conditions

Keep below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
