Indications

Aldocort 0.10 is used for replacing mineralocorticoids in the body to treat conditions such as primary and secondary adrenocortical insufficiency (Addison’s disease), salt losing adrenogenital syndrome, and postural hypotension.

Pharmacology

Aldocort 0.10 works by binding to the mineralocorticoid receptor (aldosterone receptor). This increases the movement of ions and water in the body, which raises the blood volume and pressure while lowering potassium levels.

Dosage & Administration

Primary and Secondary Adrenocortical Insufficiency (Addison’s disease): The usual dose is 0.2 mg three times a week to 0.2 mg daily. If high blood pressure occurs, reduce the dose to 0.05 mg daily. Aldocort 0.10 should be taken with cortisone or hydrocortisone.

Salt-Losing Adrenogenital Syndrome: 0.1 to 0.2 mg per day.

Postural Hypotension: 0.1-0.4 mg daily for diabetic patients with postural hypotension; 0.05-0.2 mg daily for patients with postural hypotension due to Levodopa therapy.

Interaction

Aldocort 0.10 may interact with drugs such as Amphotericin B, potassium-depleting diuretics, anticholinesterases, anticoagulants, antidiabetic drugs, antitubercular drugs, cyclosporine, digitalis glycosides, oral contraceptives, and ketoconazole.

Contraindications

There are no absolute contraindications in adrenal insufficiency. However, in the treatment of non-endocrine diseases, Aldocort 0.10 should be used carefully. Aldocort 0.10 is relatively contraindicated in people with systemic fungal infections, hypersensitivity to Fludrocortisone, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and acute infections.

Side Effects

Common side effects include issues like skin redness, bruising, dizziness, inflammation of the pancreas, increased eye pressure, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, swelling, heart problems, digestive ulcers, bone problems, seizures, menstrual changes, potassium loss, allergic reactions, and more. These side effects are more common when the drug is used in higher doses or for a long time.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Aldocort 0.10 is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Aldocort 0.10 is recommended to use Aldocort 0.10 during pregnancy only if no other options are available and the benefits outweigh the risks.

Lactation: There is no information about its presence in human milk, but corticosteroids can be passed into breast milk and might affect the baby. Caution is advised when using Aldocort 0.10 in breastfeeding women.

Precautions & Warnings

Aldocort 0.10 should not be used to treat conditions other than those listed above due to its strong effect on sodium retention. Aldocort 0.10 should be used carefully in patients with infections, heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney problems, osteoporosis, ulcers, and certain other conditions.

Overdose Effects

An overdose is unlikely, but if Aldocort 0.10 happens, treatment involves supportive and symptomatic care.
