Indications

Aldomet is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Pharmacology

Aldomet is a medicine that helps lower blood pressure. Aldomet works by affecting the nerves that control blood vessels, causing them to relax and open up. This reduces the signals that make the blood vessels tighten. Aldomet comes in two forms: one is active and works in the body, and the other is inactive until Aldomet is converted to the active form.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual starting dose is 250 mg taken two or three times a day for the first 48 hours. The dose may be adjusted after that. The maximum daily dose is 3 grams. If used with other blood pressure medications, the dose may need to be adjusted.

Children: The starting dose is based on the child’s weight, usually 10 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. The dose may be adjusted, but the maximum is 65 mg per kilogram or 3 grams a day.

Interaction

When taken with other blood pressure medicines, Aldomet can increase the effect. Aldomet may also interact with other drugs, like anesthetics, and cause changes in their effects. Aldomet should not be taken with iron supplements like ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate.

Contraindications

Aldomet should not be used by people with active liver disease, liver problems caused by this medication, or hypersensitivity to its components. Aldomet should also not be used with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.

Side Effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, headache, weakness, and dry mouth. Rare side effects can include heart problems, stomach issues, or liver problems. Aldomet can also cause mood changes, dizziness, and other issues.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your doctor before using this medicine. Aldomet can pass into breast milk, so Aldomet should be used with caution during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Aldomet should be used carefully in people with liver problems. Some people may experience swelling or weight gain, which can be managed with a diuretic (water pill). If this medicine causes severe side effects, Aldomet should be stopped. Aldomet may also need to be adjusted for people undergoing dialysis.

Overdose Effects

Overdose can cause low blood pressure, excessive drowsiness, and stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In case of overdose, medical treatment is necessary, which may include stomach pumping or fluids to help remove the drug from the body.

Therapeutic Class

Aldomet is a centrally acting antihypertensive drug, meaning Aldomet works in the brain to lower blood pressure.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C and keep away from children. Keep Aldomet in a dry place.
