Indications

Alendon is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Alendon is used to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Alendon is used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis.
Alendon is used to treat osteoporosis caused by long-term use of glucocorticoids (like prednisone) in men and women.
Alendon is used to treat Paget’s disease of bone, a condition that causes excessive bone breakdown.

Pharmacology

Alendronic acid is a type of medicine called a bisphosphonate.
Alendon works by slowing down the activity of cells that break down bone.
This helps to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures.

Dosage & Administration

The usual dose for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women is one 70 mg tablet once a week or one 10 mg tablet once a day.
For preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, the usual dose is one 35 mg tablet once a week or one 5 mg tablet once a day.
The usual dose for treating osteoporosis in men is one 70 mg tablet once a week or one 10 mg tablet once a day.
The usual dose for treating glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is one 5 mg tablet once a day, or one 10 mg tablet once a day for postmenopausal women not taking estrogen.
For treating Paget’s disease of bone, the usual dose is 40 mg once a day for six months.

Interaction

Taking Alendronic acid with certain medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin, may increase the risk of stomach problems.
Antacids and calcium supplements can reduce the absorption of Alendronic acid.

Contraindications

Alendon is not suitable for people with difficulty swallowing.
Alendon should not be used if you cannot sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes.
Alendon should not be used if you have low calcium levels in your blood.
Alendon should not be used if you are allergic to Alendronic acid.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Esophageal problems (difficulty swallowing)
  • Gas
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Headache
  • Rarely, skin rash
  • Stomach upset

Pregnancy & Lactation

Alendronic acid should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

This medication can cause irritation of the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach).
Follow the dosing instructions carefully.
Contact your doctor if you experience any new or worsening symptoms.
Low calcium levels in your blood must be treated before starting this medication.
Severe bone, joint, or muscle pain may occur in some cases.
Stop using this medication and talk to your doctor if you experience severe symptoms.
