Indications

Alergin is used as a strong and long-lasting antihistamine, with additional effects of reducing nausea and calming. Alergin is indicated for the treatment of allergic conditions affecting the respiratory system and skin. Alergin can also treat reactions to drugs or foreign proteins, including anaphylaxis. Alergin is used for sedation, managing allergic rhinitis, hives, and insomnia. Additionally, Alergin helps as a sedative before surgeries and in obstetrics. Alergin is also used as a pediatric sedative.

Pharmacology

Alergin is a type of medication that works by blocking certain receptors in the brain. Alergin also has a strong effect on certain blood vessels and reduces the release of specific hormones. Alergin competes with histamine to reduce allergic responses and may also block muscarinic receptors, which helps to prevent nausea. Alergin is absorbed well through the digestive system and starts to work within 20 minutes, lasting for 4-6 hours, although Alergin can last up to 12 hours. The body processes Alergin in the liver into various compounds, and these are then excreted through the urine.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The starting dose is one 25 mg tablet at night, which can be increased to two or three 25 mg tablets if needed. For allergic conditions, Alergin may be taken two or three times a day, starting with one or two 10 mg tablets and adjusting as necessary.

Elderly: No specific dosage recommendations.

Children: Alergin is better to use the elixir form, which has 5 mg per 5 ml.

For allergies:

  • Children 2-5 years: 5-15 mg
  • Children 5-10 years: 10-25 mg

For sedation:

  • Children 2-5 years: 15-20 mg
  • Children 5-10 years: 20-25 mg

The dose should be given at night.

Interaction

Alergin may increase the effects of other medications that affect the nervous system, such as anticholinergics, antidepressants, sedatives, and alcohol. Alergin can also interfere with urine pregnancy tests, causing false results. Alergin should be stopped at least 72 hours before skin allergy tests as Alergin may affect the response, leading to false-negative results.

Contraindications

Alergin is not recommended for children under two years old or for those who are allergic to Alergin or any of its ingredients. Alergin should not be used in patients in a coma or those with severe depression of the nervous system. Alergin should not be given to premature infants or neonates. Alergin must be avoided by patients who have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors in the last 14 days.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, muscle spasms, or involuntary movements of the face. In rare cases, a severe condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) may occur, which requires immediate medical attention. Other effects can include allergic reactions, skin sensitivity to light, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort, dry mouth, blurred vision, blood problems, urinary issues, and confusion in young children. More serious issues like irregular heartbeats and liver problems can also occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Alergin is generally considered safe during pregnancy, though Alergin should only be used if the doctor thinks Alergin’s absolutely necessary. Alergin is not recommended in the two weeks before delivery because Alergin may cause irritability and excitement in the newborn. Alergin should be avoided during late pregnancy as Alergin could cause neurological problems in the infant. Alergin can pass into breast milk and may cause irritability in the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

Alergin should be avoided in children with signs of Reye’s syndrome. Use with caution in people with lung conditions, heart disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, epilepsy, liver or kidney issues, or bladder problems. Alergin should be used carefully in patients with certain stomach issues or blockages.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms vary but can include confusion, dizziness, excitement, and in severe cases, coma. Children may experience excitation, incoordination, or hallucinations. Adults may become drowsy and may experience convulsions. Treatment typically involves supportive care, and convulsions should be treated with appropriate medications.
