Indications
Alergix MR 10 is used to relieve symptoms of conditions such as seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), perennial allergic rhinitis, and urticaria (hives).
Pharmacology
Alergix MR 10 is a non-sedating antihistamine that works by blocking histamine H1-receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract. Alergix MR 10 also helps stabilize mast cells.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children over 12 years: Take one 10 mg tablet daily.
Children under 12 years: Not recommended.
Interaction
Certain medications like Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, and antiarrhythmic drugs such as Amiodarone may increase the plasma concentration of Mizolastine, raising the risk of arrhythmias. Use with caution when taking drugs that inhibit the cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme, such as Ciclosporin. No significant effects on sedation or performance when combined with alcohol have been noted.
Contraindications
Alergix MR 10 is not recommended for people with significant heart conditions, a history of arrhythmias, QT prolongation, electrolyte imbalance (especially low potassium), or slow heart rate (bradycardia). Alergix MR 10 should also not be used in those who take drugs that interfere with its metabolism, those with severe liver problems, or anyone allergic to Mizolastine.
Side Effects
Alergix MR 10 is generally well tolerated at the recommended doses. Possible side effects include dry mouth, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, raised liver enzymes, low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, and palpitations. There have been reports of bronchospasm and worsening of asthma, but a direct link is unclear due to the high rate of asthma in the patients treated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of Mizolastine during pregnancy has not been confirmed. Animal studies do not show harmful effects on the developing baby, but Alergix MR 10 should be avoided during the first trimester. Alergix MR 10 is also excreted in breast milk, so Alergix MR 10 should not be used during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Some individuals may experience drowsiness. Alergix MR 10 is recommended to check how Alergix MR 10 affects you before driving or performing tasks that require full attention.
Overdose Effects
If overdose occurs, Alergix MR 10 is recommended to monitor the heart, including QT interval and cardiac rhythm, for at least 24 hours. Standard procedures should be followed to remove any remaining drug from the body. Studies suggest that hemodialysis is not effective in increasing the clearance of the drug in patients with kidney problems.
