Indications

Alestin is used to treat symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis, as well as chronic hives (urticaria).

Pharmacology

Alestin is a long-lasting antihistamine that works by blocking specific receptors in the body. After being taken multiple times, its effect on these receptors stays constant. Alestin is absorbed quickly and goes through a process in the body that makes Alestin more active. Most of Alestin turns into the active form called carebastine.

Dosage & Administration

Tablet:

Adults (12 years and older): 10 mg (one tablet) once a day.

Children (6-12 years): 5 mg (half tablet) once a day.

Syrup:

Children (2-5 years): 2.5 ml once a day (up to 5 ml for severe cases like Perennial Allergic Rhinitis).

Children (6-12 years): 5 ml once a day (up to 10 ml for severe cases like Perennial Allergic Rhinitis).

Alestin may be taken with or without food.

Interaction

Taking Alestin with ketoconazole or erythromycin can increase the level of Ebastine in the blood and affect the heart’s rhythm. Alestin does not interact with theophylline, warfarin, cimetidine, diazepam, or alcohol. However, alcohol and diazepam may increase drowsiness when taken together with Ebastine.

Contraindications

Alestin is not recommended for patients who are allergic to Ebastine or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are headache, dry mouth, and drowsiness. Less common side effects include stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, and trouble sleeping.

Overdose Effects

No serious symptoms were seen with doses up to 100 mg daily. There is no specific treatment for an overdose, but in case of accidental overdose, the patient should get immediate medical help, including monitoring of heart and vital signs, and symptomatic treatment as needed.
