Indications
Alexid is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to mecillinam. These include bladder infections, complicated urinary tract infections, salmonella, shigella, certain types of diarrhea, and some blood infections.
Pharmacology
Alexid is a part of a new type of penicillin called amdinopenicillin. Alexid is a prodrug, meaning Alexid turns into the active drug once absorbed in the body. Alexid works by killing bacteria by interfering with their cell wall. Alexid is especially effective against certain types of bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella, but not as effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Alexid doesn’t work well against Pseudomonas or Enterococcus.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual dose is 1-2 tablets 3 times a day, depending on how severe the infection is. For bladder infections, take 400 mg initially, then 200 mg every 8 hours for 3 days. For chronic urinary infections, take 400 mg every 6-8 hours. For salmonella, take 1.2-2.4 gm daily for 14 days. For preventing urinary infections, take 1 tablet every evening.
Children: Children under 20 kg should take 20-60 mg/kg in 3-4 doses daily. Children over 20 kg should take the normal adult dose. For salmonella and urinary infections, the dosage is adjusted based on the child’s weight.
