Indications

Alfacon is used to prevent and treat damage caused by faulty or insufficient protein metabolism in people with chronic kidney disease. This is especially helpful when the person has a restricted protein intake of 40 gm/day or less (for adults). Alfacon is usually recommended for people whose kidney function is seriously reduced, with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of less than 25 ml/min.

Pharmacology

Alfacon is a supplement that contains amino acids, some of which are in the form of their ketoanalogues, and is important for people with chronic kidney disease. Alfacon works in the body by improving protein metabolism and kidney function. Alfacon helps the body take in essential amino acids while reducing the intake of amino nitrogen. The body uses these compounds to help with amino acid absorption and reduce the formation of waste substances like urea.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: Unless instructed otherwise by a doctor, take 4-8 tablets 3 times a day with meals. This is for adults weighing around 70 kg. Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew them. The diet should include 40 g of protein or less per day. Taking the tablets with meals helps the body absorb them properly. This treatment continues as long as the GFR is between 5 and 25 mL/min.

Interaction

Taking calcium-containing drugs along with Alfacon may cause high levels of calcium in the blood. If aluminum hydroxide is used, the dose of this supplement should be reduced if necessary. Certain medications like tetracyclines, quinolones (such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin), and drugs containing iron, fluoride, or estramustine should not be taken at the same time as Amino Acid Ketoanalogues to avoid absorption issues. A two-hour gap should be maintained between taking these medicines. Alfacon may increase the risk of arrhythmia when used with cardioactive glycosides. If aluminum hydroxide is taken with Alfacon, serum phosphate levels need to be monitored.

Contraindications

Alfacon should not be used by individuals who are allergic to the active substances or any of the ingredients. Alfacon is also contraindicated in people with high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) or disturbed amino acid metabolism.

Side Effects

In rare cases, Alfacon may cause high calcium levels (hypercalcemia). If this happens, the intake of vitamin D should be reduced. If the high calcium levels persist, the dose of this supplement and other calcium sources should also be reduced.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is not enough information about its use during pregnancy. Animal studies have not shown any harmful effects on pregnancy or fetal development, but Alfacon should still be used cautiously. There is no experience with using Alfacon during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Regular monitoring of calcium levels in the blood is important. Make sure you are getting enough calories while using this supplement. People with a condition called phenylketonuria should be cautious, as Alfacon contains phenylalanine. Serum phosphate levels should also be monitored if taking aluminum hydroxide with this supplement.
