Indications
Algia is used to treat neuropathic pain and as an additional therapy for partial seizures and secondary generalized seizures.
Pharmacology
Algia is an anticonvulsant that is similar to gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA). Its effects are caused by the activity of the main compound. Algia binds to a specific part of a calcium channel and may stop the release of certain neurotransmitters that can excite nerves.
Dosage & Administration
Neuropathic Pain: Start with 300 mg once a day on Day-1, then 300 mg twice a day on Day-2, and 300 mg three times a day on Day-3. The dose may be increased if more pain relief is needed, up to 1800 mg daily (divided into three doses).
Epilepsy: For patients over 12 years: The usual dose is between 900 and 1800 mg per day, split into three doses. The starting dose is 300 mg three times a day. For children aged 3-12 years: Start with 10-15 mg per kg per day, split into three doses. The dose can be increased over about three days.
Interaction
Antacids can lower the absorption of Algia by up to 20%. Cimetidine may change how Algia is removed from the body. Algia does not interact with other anti-epileptic drugs or birth control pills.
Contraindications
Algia is not recommended for people who are allergic to Algia.
Side Effects
Common side effects include tiredness, dizziness, loss of coordination, weight gain, swelling in the legs or arms, dry mouth, and drowsiness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Algia should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. Algia may pass into breast milk, so Algia should be used cautiously if you are breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Algia should be taken only as prescribed. Patients should be careful about driving or using heavy machinery until they know how Algia affects their mental and physical abilities.
