Indications

Allertin is used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and urticaria (hives), such as sneezing, itchy and runny nose, blocked nose, and red, watery eyes.

Pharmacology

Allertin is a non-sedating antihistamine that works by blocking histamine, which causes allergy symptoms. Allertin binds strongly to H1 receptors, preventing allergic reactions. Allertin does not affect other body systems, making Allertin safe to use for most people. Allertin is mostly eliminated through urine and feces.

Dosage & Administration

Adults & Adolescents (12 years and older): Take one 20 mg tablet daily. Swallow the tablet with water on an empty stomach for best results.

Children (6-11 years): Take one 10 mg dissolving tablet daily. The tablet should dissolve in the mouth, or Allertin can be dissolved in a spoonful of water before swallowing.

Children (2-11 years): Take 4 ml once daily.

If you miss a dose, take Allertin as soon as possible but do not take an extra dose.

Interaction

Taking Allertin with ketoconazole, erythromycin, cyclosporine, or diltiazem may increase its concentration. However, Allertin does not affect the safety of these drugs. Alcohol does not worsen its effects, and combining Allertin with lorazepam does not increase drowsiness.

Contraindications

Allertin is not recommended for people who are allergic to Allertin or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Common side effects are headache, dizziness, tiredness, and drowsiness, which are similar to the placebo in trials.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is limited information about its use during pregnancy. Animal studies show no harmful effects, but Allertin is best to avoid using Allertin during pregnancy as a precaution. Allertin is unknown if Allertin passes into breast milk, so the decision to use Allertin should balance the benefits for the mother and child.

Precautions & Warnings

Allertin does not affect driving performance, but rare cases of drowsiness may occur. Allertin is safe for elderly patients, and no dosage adjustment is needed for those with kidney problems. Since Allertin is not metabolized in the liver, liver changes are unlikely to affect Allertin.

Overdose Effects

If taken in large amounts, you may experience dizziness, headache, and nausea, but there are no serious risks or long-term effects.
