Alphaten is used to lower high eye pressure in people with glaucoma or eye hypertension.
Pharmacology
Alphaten is a combination of two ingredients: Brimonidine Tartrate and Timolol Maleate. Brimonidine Tartrate works by reducing fluid production in the eye and improving fluid drainage. Timolol Maleate lowers eye pressure by decreasing fluid production. Together, these two ingredients work quickly, with peak effect seen within two hours of use.
Dosage & Administration
Place 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day.
Interaction
There are no specific drug interaction studies available.
Contraindications
Alphaten is not recommended for people allergic to any ingredient in the product. Alphaten should also be avoided in patients with asthma, severe lung diseases, slow heart rate, heart block, heart failure, or shock.
Side Effects
Common side effects include red or irritated eyes, itching, and a stinging or burning sensation in the eyes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Alphaten should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Timolol is found in breast milk, but Alphaten is unclear if Brimonidine Tartrate is passed to the baby. A decision should be made whether to stop breastfeeding or stop the medication, depending on how important the medicine is to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
Like other eye drops, Alphaten can be absorbed into the body. Because Alphaten contains Timolol, Alphaten can cause heart and lung side effects, similar to those seen with oral beta-blockers. Alphaten should be used cautiously in patients with heart or lung problems.
Overdose Effects
No overdose effects are available.
Therapeutic Class
Eye drops for glaucoma and other eye conditions.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not use more than 30 days after opening the bottle. Keep out of reach of children.
