Indications

Alprazol is used for treating anxiety disorders, providing short-term relief of anxiety, treating anxiety related to depression, and managing panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia.

Pharmacology

Alprazol is a type of drug called benzodiazepine. Alprazol works by interacting with a specific part of the brain that helps reduce anxiety. Alprazol can also have calming and muscle-relaxing effects, and Alprazol may affect the brain in a way that leads to drowsiness or sleepiness depending on the dose.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The treatment usually starts with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times a day. The dose can be increased gradually based on how the person responds, but Alprazol should not exceed 4 mg per day. Some patients with panic disorder may need up to 10 mg per day, but this requires regular reassessment by a doctor.

Elderly patients: The starting dose is usually 0.25 mg two or three times a day, and Alprazol can be adjusted based on tolerance and need.

The medication should be taken whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken.

Interaction

Taking Alprazol with other drugs that depress the central nervous system, such as psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, alcohol, or oral contraceptives, may increase its sedative effects.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually seen when starting the medication and often go away with continued use. Common side effects include drowsiness and dizziness. Other possible side effects are depression, headaches, confusion, dry mouth, and constipation.

Alprazol is classified in pregnancy category D, meaning Alprazol should be avoided during pregnancy. Alprazol is also likely passed through breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers should not use this medication.

Precautions & Warnings

Alprazol should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems, chronic lung conditions, or sleep apnea. Alprazol may cause physical and psychological dependence, so the dose should be increased or decreased only under a doctor’s supervision.

Overdose Effects

Overdosing on Alprazol may cause sleepiness, confusion, poor coordination, slow reflexes, and even coma. Immediate medical help should be sought, and gastric lavage may be needed in case of overdose.
