Indications

Altex is used to treat infections caused by certain gastrointestinal worms. Altex works quickly by paralyzing the worm’s muscles, which causes them to be expelled from the body usually within 24 hours. The drug affects the nervous system of the worms, and in some cases, Altex may also affect their energy systems. Altex is effective against roundworm, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm, threadworm, and other similar worms.

Pharmacology

Altex is the active form of tetramisole and works by paralyzing the worms in the intestines, causing them to be removed from the body. Altex also helps improve the body’s immune response.

Dosage & Administration

For children 1-4 years: 1 tablet or 5 ml syrup.

For children 5-15 years: 2 tablets or 10 ml syrup.

For adults and children 16 years and older: 3 tablets or 15 ml syrup.

If there is a severe hookworm infection, a second dose may be needed one or seven days after the first dose.

Interaction

Altex may increase the toxicity of phenytoin, and also increases the effectiveness of ivermectin while reducing the effectiveness of albendazole. Alcohol may cause a reaction similar to disulfiram.

Contraindications

There are no absolute reasons to avoid using Altex, but always consult a healthcare provider before use.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare and are generally mild. They may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, and headache. In a few cases, some people have experienced symptoms like encephalopathy two or three weeks after taking Altex.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal studies have shown no harmful effects, Altex is important to weigh the benefits and risks of using Altex during pregnancy. Always consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Altex is unlikely to cause sedation or drowsiness, but mild dizziness may occur in some cases. No special precautions are needed for driving or operating machinery. If there is a concurrent microfilaria infection, a temporary fever may occur.

Overdose Effects

In case of overdose, the effects of anticholinesterase should be treated with atropine. Blood pressure and breathing should be monitored. Do not use sedatives in this situation.
