Indications

Altrip is used to treat the acute headache phase of migraine attacks, with or without aura. Altrip is the only oral triptan approved in the USA for treating migraines in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years.

Pharmacology

Altrip is a strong and selective serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine 1B/1D) agonist. Altrip works by attaching to specific serotonin receptors on the arteries, reducing the release of certain peptides, and causing the arteries to narrow. Altrip has little effect on the arteries supplying the brain and minimal effect on cardiac and pulmonary vessels.

Dosage & Administration

Acute Treatment of Migraine Attacks: The recommended dose for adults and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years is 6.25 mg to 12.5 mg, with the 12.5 mg dose being more effective in adults. If the headache returns after the initial dose, Altrip can be repeated after 2 hours. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 25 mg. Altrip is not safe to treat more than four migraines in a 30-day period.

Hepatic Impairment: The starting dose for patients with liver problems is 6.25 mg, and the maximum daily dose should not exceed 12.5 mg in 24 hours.

Renal Impairment: The starting dose for patients with severe kidney problems is 6.25 mg, and the maximum daily dose should not exceed 12.5 mg in 24 hours.

Interaction

Using Altrip with other drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), may cause serious reactions, including serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

Contraindications

Altrip should not be used by people with a history of heart disease, including heart attacks, chest pain, or severe high blood pressure. Altrip should also not be used together with ergotamine, ergotamine derivatives, or other 5-HT1B/1D agonists.

Side Effects

Although rare, serious heart reactions, such as heart attacks, have been reported. These reactions are more common in people who already have heart disease.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Altrip is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There is no information about whether Altrip is passed into human milk during breastfeeding.
