Indications

Amantril 100 is used to treat Parkinson’s disease, drug-induced movement disorders, and to prevent and treat symptoms caused by influenza A virus infection.

Pharmacology

Amantril 100 affects dopamine neurons, helping release dopamine and preventing its reuptake. Amantril 100 works on dopamine receptors to enhance their function and also has properties that reduce excitatory signals in the brain. Amantril 100 helps improve symptoms in Parkinson’s disease and reduces the effects of levodopa, a common treatment for Parkinson’s. Amantril 100 also helps prevent the virus from spreading within the body by interfering with its proteins.

Dosage & Administration

Parkinson’s disease: Adults typically take 100 mg twice a day. The dose may be increased to 200 mg daily, or up to 400 mg in some cases, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.

Drug-induced movement disorders: The usual dose is 100 mg twice a day, but may be increased to 300 mg daily.

Influenza A virus: Adults take 200 mg/day as a single dose or 100 mg twice a day.

Children: The dose depends on the child’s age. For children aged 1 to 9 years, 4.4 to 8.8 mg/kg/day, not exceeding 150 mg/day. For children aged 9 to 12 years, 100 mg twice a day.

Patients with kidney problems: The dose should be reduced based on kidney function.

Always take the medicine with or without food as directed by your doctor.

Interaction

Taking Amantril 100 with anticholinergic drugs or levodopa can cause confusion, hallucinations, and other side effects. Amantril 100 may also increase side effects when combined with alcohol or other medications that affect the brain.

Contraindications

Amantril 100 should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients or have known hypersensitivity reactions to Amantril 100.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and swollen ankles. Other side effects may include mood changes, headaches, blurred vision, nervousness, dry mouth, constipation, and sweating.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Amantril 100 is a category C drug, meaning its safety during pregnancy has not been fully studied. Amantril 100 should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Amantril 100 passes into breast milk, so Amantril 100 should be used cautiously while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Amantril 100 should not be stopped suddenly in patients with Parkinson’s disease as Amantril 100 can cause a sudden worsening of symptoms. Caution is needed when using this medication with other drugs that affect the central nervous system.

Overdose Effects

Overdose can be very dangerous and may cause symptoms like confusion, seizures, and heart problems. Immediate medical attention is needed if an overdose is suspected. There is no specific antidote, but treatments to support the body and reduce symptoms can be given.
