Indications
Amibac is used to treat serious infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Amibac is effective in treating infections in the blood, lungs, bones, joints, nervous system (including meningitis), skin, and soft tissue. Amibac also works for infections inside the abdomen, including peritonitis, as well as burns and infections after surgery. Amibac has also been found to be effective for complicated or repeated urinary tract infections caused by resistant bacteria.
Amibac is effective against infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics like gentamicin and tobramycin, especially against certain bacteria like Proteus rettgeri, Providencia stuartii, Serratia marcescens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Amibac is also used to treat infections caused by staphylococci and can be used as a first treatment for severe infections, especially when the exact bacteria causing the infection are not known.
Pharmacology
Amibac is a type of antibiotic known as an aminoglycoside. Amibac is effective against a range of bacteria, including Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Proteus, and several other types. Many of these bacteria are resistant to other similar antibiotics, but they are still susceptible to Amibac. Amibac is also effective against Staphylococcus species, including those resistant to methicillin.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children: The typical dose is 15 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, split into two doses (which is 500 mg twice a day for adults).
Neonates and premature children: The initial dose is 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, followed by 15 mg per kilogram per day in two doses.
Elderly: Amibac is cleared by the kidneys, so elderly patients should have their kidney function checked, and the dose may need to be adjusted.
Life-threatening infections or Pseudomonas infections: The dose may be increased to 500 mg every eight hours, but should not exceed 1.5 g per day, and should not be used for more than 10 days.
Urinary tract infections (except Pseudomonas): 7.5 mg per kilogram of body weight per day in two doses (250 mg twice a day for adults).
Impaired kidney function: The dose may need to be reduced or given less frequently in patients with kidney problems.
Interaction
Amibac should not be used with muscle relaxants as Amibac can increase their effects, potentially stopping breathing. Amibac should not be combined with other aminoglycoside antibiotics because they can increase the risk of ear and kidney damage. Amibac should also not be used with fast-acting diuretics if the patient has kidney problems, as Amibac can increase the risk of ear damage. Combining Amibac with Cephalosporins or Polymixins may also increase the risk of kidney damage.
Contraindications
Amibac is not recommended for people who are allergic to Amibac or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Some side effects may include ringing in the ears, dizziness, partial or complete hearing loss, skin rash, fever, headache, tingling, nausea, and vomiting.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Amibac can cross the placenta and may harm the baby, potentially causing ear damage. There is no clear information about its safety while breastfeeding, so Amibac should only be used if absolutely necessary and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings
Since Amibac is processed by the kidneys, Amibac is important for patients to stay hydrated to avoid kidney damage. If kidney problems occur, the treatment should be stopped. Monitoring of kidney function is especially important during treatment with this antibiotic.
Overdose Effects
If an overdose occurs, dialysis (either peritoneal or hemodialysis) can help remove Amibac from the blood.
Therapeutic Class
Aminoglycoside antibiotics
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
