Indications
Amilin Plus is used to treat moderate to severe depression along with moderate to severe anxiety. The symptoms that usually improve in the first week include difficulty sleeping, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, restlessness, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, and loss of appetite.
Pharmacology
Amitriptyline is a type of antidepressant, and Chlordiazepoxide is an anti-anxiety medicine. Amitriptyline works by blocking the reabsorption of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, which helps improve mood. Chlordiazepoxide works by enhancing the effects of a calming neurotransmitter (GABA) in the brain, leading to a relaxing and anti-anxiety effect.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: The dose varies depending on the severity of symptoms and individual response. Once a satisfactory result is reached, the dosage should be lowered to the smallest effective dose. A larger part of the total dose may be taken at bedtime, and sometimes a single dose at bedtime is enough. The typical starting dose is 3 or 4 tablets per day, split into smaller doses. Or as directed by the physician.
Pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
Interaction
Because Amilin Plus contains Amitriptyline, this medication may reduce the effectiveness of guanethidine or similar medicines that lower blood pressure.
Contraindications
Amilin Plus should not be used in patients who are allergic to benzodiazepines or tricyclic antidepressants. Amilin Plus should not be taken with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
Side Effects
Common side effects include symptoms like loss of appetite, tiredness, weakness, restlessness, and sluggishness, which are similar to those seen in depression.
Other possible side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, and bloating. Less common effects include vivid dreams, sexual issues, shaking, confusion, and stuffy nose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Amilin Plus is not clear if this medication is safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor before using Amilin Plus during these times.
Precautions & Warnings
Amilin Plus should be used carefully in patients with a history of seizures. Close monitoring is needed for people with thyroid problems or those on thyroid medication. Patients with kidney or liver issues should be observed closely. Children taking antidepressants should be monitored carefully for signs of worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual behavior changes.
Overdose Effects
Overdose can be life-threatening. Serious symptoms of Amitriptyline overdose include irregular heartbeats, very low blood pressure, seizures, and coma. Overdose with Chlordiazepoxide may cause sleepiness, confusion, coma, and reduced reflexes.
Withdrawal symptoms, such as convulsions, tremors, stomach cramps, vomiting, and sweating, may occur if Chlordiazepoxide is stopped suddenly. Milder withdrawal symptoms, like irritability and trouble sleeping, can happen with long-term use of benzodiazepines. Sudden stopping of Amitriptyline may cause nausea, headaches, and general discomfort.
